Нейродегенеративные заболевания ‒ такие, как болезнь Альцгеймера (БА), болезнь Паркинсона (БП), боковой амиотрофический склероз (болезнь Шарко), болезнь Хантингтона (БХ) и спиномозжечковые атаксии (СМА) представляют собой огромную медицинскую, социальную, финансовую и научную проблему. Распространенность этих заболеваний будет расти со старением населения, и большинство развитых стран уже сейчас предоставляют специальную поддержку исследованиям в области изучения нейродегенеративных заболеваний.
В России уже есть несколько лабораторий, работающих в этой области, такие, как лаборатория акад. А.А. Макарова в Институте молекулярной биологии им. В. А. Энгельгардта РАН, акад. М.В. Угрюмова в Институте биологии развития им. Н.К. Кольцова РАН, чл.-корр. РАН А.Г. Габибова в Институте биоорганической химии им. М.М. Шемякина, Ю.А. Овчинникова РАН и проф. Е.И. Рогаева в МГУ. Однако несмотря на наличие передовых лабораторий, работающих в данной сфере, физиологические и функциональные исследования в области нейродегенерации недостаточно развиты в России, и, в частности, в Санкт-Петербурге (все названные лаборатории расположены в Москве).
Открытие и развитие Лаборатории молекулярной нейродегенерации в Политехническом университете помогает заполнить пробел в этой важной области исследований. ЛМН уже начала играть важную роль в развитии и практическом приложении достижений традиционно очень сильной физиологической школы Санкт-Петербурга в области передовых вопросов современной молекулярной медицины и нейродегенерации. Об этом свидетельствуют научные публикации работ, выполненных непосредственно в стенах Политехнического университета сотрудниками ЛМН.
